What is Dual Diagnosis?

Dual diagnosis is a medical condition in which an individual simultaneously suffers from a mental disorder and a substance use disorder. There can be various causes of dual diagnosis, and the origin may also vary. For example, some individuals who have the problem of mental health disorders can turn to drugs or alcohol as a means of self-medication.

Similarly, others can develop mental disorders due to prolonged substance abuse. This medical condition is very common within the recovery and addiction community, where almost half of the cases are diagnosed with co-existing disorders.

Co-Existing Disorders Signs

Like drug or alcohol addiction, some signs show an individual may be suffering from co-existing disorders. For example, suppose an individual uses addictive substances in excess quantity and shows any of the following symptoms.

In that case, the individual is likely suffering from a mental disorder and concurrent addiction. These signs are poor performance at school or work, depression, insomnia, isolation, fatigue, fear, anxiety, mood swings, suicidal ideation, and memory loss.
